Johnsons Crossing to Carmacks          Video

The Teslin and upper Yukon is more of wilderness trip. There is less mining and fewer people than on the Carmacks/Dawson leg. These photos are in geographic order as you travel down the river.

This was the second week in June. There was still snow on the hillsides and a couple of nights approached freezing.

Mason's Landing

There are a few buildings that are the remains of a small settlement on an overland trail. There is a good campsite just upriver.

The Teslin has a more wild and intimate feeling than the Yukon.

Since the Teslin is narrow, it is easy to see wildlife on either bank.

Hootilinqua

Hootilinqua

The Teslin and the 40 Mile from Lake Laberge meet at Hootilinqua. It was a Mountie station and river boat landing. A few buildings and graveyard remain. There is a modern cook shelter and outhouses. Fishing is good.

Shipyard Island

Shipyard Island

The remains of the sternwheeler Evelyn (Norcom) are on an island just below Hootilinqua. Many river boats were pulled on shore and left after roads made them obsolete.

Summer

Summer

Midsummer heat can make the cold water of the Yukon inviting to some.

Big Salmon

Big Salmon

At Big Salmon there are the remains of a trading post and First Nation village. A telegraph station was across the river but a forest fire destroyed it.

Whitehorse to Dawson Race

Whitehorse to Dawson Race

Several times we have been camped at Big Salmon when many of the boats in the Whitehorse to Dawson race went by. They lay over in Carmacks. Some are in it to have fun. Some are serious racers. Others want to draw attention to a cause.

Cyr's Dredge

Cyr's Dredge

This photo from the early 80s shows the dredge intact. Most of it is now under water and it is on its side. There is a good campsite behind the dredge.

Little Salmon - the sound of trucks

You encounter a road to Carmacks at Little Salmon. There are many new buildings mixed in with the old. A large cemetery is at one end of the First Nation settlement.

Camping Below Little Salmon

Camping Below Little Salmon

There are several good campsites between Little Salmon and Carmacks. You may want to stay and get into Carmacks early so you have time to shop and clean up at the campground.

The Coal Mine Campground is on the right bank before the bridge. A store on the other side of the bridge offers all you need to resupply. The campground offers showers, laundry, cabins, tent sites, and a cafe.
