Carmacks to Dawson     Video

The second leg of the trip has more people. You are more apt to be camping and sharing a campfire with others. This slideshow is in the order of the places you see along the river.

Putting in at Carmacks

Putting in at Carmacks

Most people put in at the Coal Mine Campground or at the boat ramp at the old government campground on the other side of the river.

Five Finger Rapids

Five Finger Rapids

Not far below Carmacks are the only unavoidable rapids. Lash two canoes together if you do not want to risk losing gear.

Five Finger Island

Five Finger Island

If you are feeling a little daring, it is possible to eddy turn behind the left hand island and get to shore. It is heavily populated by gull and features a striking stone arch.

Yukon Crossing

Yukon Crossing

Yukon Crossing has a good campsite behind the old barn. It is fun to look around this old way station on the overland route to Dawson.

Minto

Minto

At Minto you see the last of the road. It was a good place to camp, but now it is a staging area for a mine. It is best to keep going if you are looking for a campsite.

Fort Selkirk

Fort Selkirk

Ft. Selkirk was deserted in the 40s. At different times a Native settlement, a Hudson's Bay trading post, an army post, and a river community flourished here. Now it is sometimes quiet and at other times there is much activity.

Catholic Church at Fort Selkirk

Catholic Church at Fort Selkirk

There are many old buildings in good repair spread out over many acres. There is a large First Nation grave site behind this church. A Native work crew keeps Ft. Selkirk in repair. If you can afford the time, it is a good place to linger a day or two.

Coffee Creek

Coffee Creek

Coffee Creek was a farm/ranch. People have lived there on and off. Lately there has been a lot of mining equipment. Do not count on camping there.

Kirkman Creek

Kirkman Creek

Linda Taylor lives here in the summer. Her family has lived in the area for generations. She rents campsites and sells some of the best homemade bread you will ever taste.

Near the Mouth of the White River

Near the Mouth of the White River

There are several good campsites in this area. Again, remember to respect the property and space of others.

Stewart Island

Stewart Island

Stewart Island is owned by the Burian family. It was a good place to stop but erosion has taken most of the island and there is little there.

Beach Camping

Beach Camping

Developed campsites seem to be more rare. Island camping is often a good choice.

Galena (Pedro) Creek

Galena (Pedro) Creek

People are at Galena Creek at times. It is a commercial endeavor that never seems to get off the ground. Lately they are charging very high prices just to camp. You may want to consider camping on an island or going to Dawson.

Dawson

Dawson

Dawson has several good places to eat, many hotels, a hostel, a few campgrounds, and an active night life.
