Canoeing and Paddling the Yukon and Teslin Rivers

Breakfast at Hootilinqua
Thoughts on food and cooking:
• eggs last longer than you think
• uncured meat does not last long at all
• fresh fruit and veg. are fine but weigh a lot
• keep it simple (weather may not cooperate with elaborate cooking)
• resupply at Carmacks (expensive but handy) (map)
• be "bear aware" especially when cooking
• you can count on fish for at least one meal
• tuck away a freeze dried meal for a stormy day
• cook only what you will eat; food disposal is a problem
• cook and keep food away from tents
• make a menu
• cooking over an open fire is scenic but difficult and dirty
• buy bread from Linda at Kirkman Creek (see Kirkman Creek)
• organizing your food by meal does not work in a small group
• make jello in the morning, put covered container in bottom of canoe
• beer is heavy, whiskey is not
• Pilot Bread is good!
• Pilot Bread and the like is available in AK and YT (see Pilot Bread)
• canned chicken is almost indispensable (best from Costco)
• vacuum bag seal what you can into meal-size portions
• hot drinks are good on a rainy day; bring a vacuum bottle
• some people are better camp cooks than others; eat it anyway
• plan some lunches you can eat while floating
• heat water over the fire to save on fuel
• use 2 fire irons - they do not sag with heat and take up little room
• bring paper clamps or clothes pins to reseal open bags of food
• eating is a social event, share if others are near
